Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is administered by representatives from the Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) and is required for enlistment in any branch of the Armed Forces.

ELIGIBILITY

You may be eligible to take the ASVAB if you
Are 17 years of age
1st Retest - have allowed one month to expire from the initial test
2nd Retest - have allowed one month to expire from the 1st retest
3rd Retest and up - have allowed six months to expire from the 2nd or subsequent retest.

Note: ASVAB scores are valid for two years.

COMPOSITION OF THE TEST AND COMPUTATION FOR AIR FORCE APPLICANTS

Every applicant administered the ASVAB takes all eleven parts. The raw scores are then converted into a format dictated by each service.

Word Knowledge (WK)

A 35-item subtest measuring ability to select the correct meaning of words presented in context and to identify the best synonym for a given word

11 minutes

Paragraph Comprehension (PC)

A 15-item subtest measuring ability to obtain information from written passages

13 minutes

Numerical Operations (NO)

A 20-item timed subtest measuring ability to perform arithmetic computations

3 minutes

Coding Speed (CS)

A 25-item subtest measuring knowledge

7 minutes

Auto & Shop Information (AS)

A 25-item subtest measuring knowledge of automobiles, tools, and shop terminology and practice

11 minutes

Mathematics Knowledge (MK)

A 25-item subtest measuring knowledge of high school mathematics principles

24 minutes

Mechanical Comprehension (MC)

A 25-item subtest measuring knowledge of mechanical and physical principles and ability to visualize now illustrated objects work

A 20-item subtest of knowledge of electricity and electronics

Each career field that the Air Force offers will require a minimum score in one or more of these areas (Mechanical, Administrative, General or Electronic).

Career fields selection by an applicant is based on ASVAB scores and corresponding jobs vacancies.
